What's happening
The bed has turned into a place where your mind reactivates instead of a place where it settles. This is a learnable pattern. The brain pairs cues (the bedroom, the pillow, the time on the clock) with what it experiences in that location. If you've been awake and anxious in bed enough nights, the bed becomes a cue for being awake and anxious.
The fastest way to unwind the pattern is to break the cue. The sleep medicine literature is clear about this. If you're awake in bed for more than 15 to 20 minutes, leave the bed, do something boring, and come back when you feel sleep coming.
A 60-second reset
- Notice. It's been about 20 minutes. The loop is on. The clock math has started. That's the moment.
- Name. Say it: "My brain is treating the bed as a cue." Naming the pattern reduces the urgency.
- Unload. Get up. Move to another room. Open Unstuck and write down what your brain keeps coming back to. Even a partial sentence. The point is to move the thing out of working memory.
- Next Step. Sit somewhere boring for 10 to 15 minutes with the lights low. No phone scrolling. No work. When you feel sleep coming, go back to bed. Repeat if needed.
What not to do
- Don't lie in bed forcing it. The bed gets more associated with not sleeping with every minute you stay.
- Don't check the time repeatedly. The math makes the arousal worse.
- Don't reach for social media or news. Both reactivate the brain.
If this keeps happening
If the cycle has been on for more than three months, on more than three nights a week, with daytime impairment, that's the threshold for insomnia disorder. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line treatment and works better than sleep medications for chronic insomnia. Talk to a clinician.

Your next step in The Shrink Network
You are here: Unstuck, the reset layer of The Shrink Network. This site does one job: small, self-guided resets for the moment you're in. The rest of the network covers understanding, evidence, medication, patterns, and care.
Each site in the network has one job. No matter where you enter, we help you find the next step that makes sense.
