Why most of this stuff doesn't work in a hard moment
Most mental health tools are built for the version of you that isn't currently overwhelmed. They want you to log in, fill out a daily mood scale, complete a thought record, journal in three colors, build a streak, set a goal. That's fine when you're regulated. It's almost impossible when you're not.
The moment most people actually need help is the moment those tools want too much from them. That's the moment Unstuck is built for.
What the Reset Method is
The Reset Method is four small moves I use clinically with patients between sessions and use myself when the day gets loud. They're not steps in a system. You don't have to do them in order. You don't have to do all four. You do whichever ones the moment needs.
- Notice. Catch the moment before the moment runs you.
- Name. Put a word on what's happening.
- Unload. Get the thought out of your head and onto something that holds it.
- Next Step. One small action. Then close the app.
That's the whole framework. The reason it works is that it's small enough to actually do when you're not at your best.
Notice
You can't reset a moment you didn't notice you were in.
Most of the work in psychiatry that gets called "regulation" or "mindfulness" is actually noticing. It's the half-second between the thing happening and the thought running. The wake-up at 2 a.m. The chest tightness before the meeting. The third refresh of the email you're avoiding. The fifth tab on your phone that you don't remember opening.
Unstuck makes noticing easier in two ways. First, the daily check-in is a small scheduled noticing event. Second, the reset tools sit on the home screen, so when you do notice, the next move is already in front of you.
Name
Naming a feeling reduces it. There's a small body of research on this (it's called affect labeling) and there's a much larger body of clinical experience that confirms it. When you put a word on what you're feeling, the feeling becomes something you can work with instead of something running you.
The daily check-in inside Unstuck is a structured way to do this. Mood. Energy. What's on your plate. It's not a screening tool. It's not diagnostic. It's a small daily naming exercise.
You can also name a moment in the journal in your own words. Sometimes the word is "overwhelmed." Sometimes it's more specific. Either works.
Unload
The journal is where you put down the thing you've been carrying.
There are two reasons this works. First, working memory is small. If a thought is taking up space in your head, you have less room for everything else. Writing it down moves it from working memory into something more durable. Second, the act of writing is itself a small reset. Your handwriting (or typing) is slower than your thinking, which forces the thinking to slow down with it.
Unstuck doesn't want anything from your journal. It doesn't read it. It doesn't summarize it. It doesn't run sentiment analysis on it. It stays on your device, and the only thing the app does with it is store it where you can find it again.
Next Step
The fourth move is the one that ends the moment. One small action. Not a plan. Not a system. One thing.
Sometimes it's a grounding phrase. Sometimes it's a box breath. Sometimes it's a tomorrow container ("This belongs to tomorrow, not tonight"). Sometimes it's a reminder you set so you don't have to keep thinking about the thing. Sometimes the next step is "close the app and go to sleep."
The reason the Next Step is small is that small is what you can actually do when you're tired, overwhelmed, or up at 2 a.m. Large next steps are for the version of you that's already regulated. Small ones work in the moment you actually need them.
Why this isn't just journaling
The Reset Method is what makes Unstuck a reset app rather than a journaling app. Journaling is one of the four moves (Unload). It's not the whole work.
Most journaling apps stop at "here's a blank text field." That's useful when you have something to write. It's not useful when you don't know yet what's happening or what to do about it. The Reset Method gives you the rest of the moves.
What Unstuck does and doesn't promise
Unstuck won't change what's hard. It won't fix anxiety. It won't replace clinical care. If you're in crisis, the right move isn't an app. It's 988 or 911. If you need a clinical relationship, that's a clinician.
What Unstuck does is make the small moves smaller. The Reset Method is the why behind that. The app is the how.

Your next step in The Shrink Network
You are here: Unstuck, the reset layer of The Shrink Network. This site does one job: small, self-guided resets for the moment you're in. The rest of the network covers understanding, evidence, medication, patterns, and care.
Each site in the network has one job. No matter where you enter, we help you find the next step that makes sense.
