You own your Unstuck data. Take it with you any time. Delete it any time. This page explains how export and delete work, what the export file looks like, and how Unstuck data behaves with iOS features like iCloud Backup, device transfer, and restore from backup.
How to export your Unstuck data
- Open Unstuck.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Export.
- Choose what to export. The default is everything.
- Tap Create Export. Unstuck writes a single archive to your device.
- Use the iOS share sheet to save to Files, AirDrop, email, or any other destination.
The export is created on your device. It does not pass through any Unstuck server.
What format the export uses
Each export is a single .zip archive that contains:
journal.json: your journal entriescheckins.json: your check-in selectionsreminders.json: your reminder schedulesroutines.json: your saved routinespreferences.json: your app preferencesmanifest.json: export schema version and timestamp
Each .json file is plain text and can be opened by any text editor. You can import the data into other apps, scripts, or a personal backup of your choice.
A future release may add .csv, .md, or .txt formats.
What is included in an export
- Journal entries (text content, date, time, any tags)
- Check-in selections (mood, energy, activity tags, date, time)
- Reminder schedules and content (hydration, journal, check-in, backup pill, appointment)
- Routines you created or customized
- App preferences
What is not included in an export
- App lock PIN
- Biometric data (Apple never shares your Face ID or Touch ID template with apps, so there is nothing for Unstuck to export)
- Device logs
How to import your export elsewhere
You can use the JSON files in any tool that accepts text. Common uses:
- Notion or Obsidian: import the journal entries as plain text or Markdown.
- Day One: paste the journal entries into Day One entries.
- A personal backup: store the
.zipsomewhere safe (a password manager's encrypted notes, an encrypted USB, an encrypted Time Machine backup). - Plain text: open the
.jsonin TextEdit, BBEdit, or any text editor.
Treat the exported file like the journal it is. Once a file leaves the app, you decide where it goes and who sees it.
How to delete
You can delete:
- One entry: open the entry, tap the trash icon.
- One category: Settings > Manage Data > [Category] > Delete All.
- The whole app: Settings > Manage Data > Delete Everything, then optionally uninstall the app from your home screen.
Deletion happens on your device. There is no server copy to also delete because there is no server copy to begin with.
iCloud Backup
If your iPhone has iCloud Backup turned on at the device level, your Unstuck app data can ride along in your iCloud device backup. This is an Apple-managed backup tied to your iCloud account.
- To verify: iOS Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Backups > This iPhone.
- To exclude Unstuck from iCloud Backup: iOS Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Backups > This iPhone > Unstuck > toggle off.
- To turn iCloud Backup off entirely for the device: iOS Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > toggle off.
Restore from backup
If you restore your iPhone from an iCloud Backup or a computer backup that included Unstuck, your Unstuck data will be restored to the state of the backup. New entries written after the backup point will not be present.
Transfer to a new iPhone
When you set up a new iPhone using Quick Start from your old iPhone (or restore from an iCloud Backup), Unstuck data on the old device will appear on the new device.
If you migrate by downloading Unstuck fresh on the new device without restoring from a backup, you start with an empty Unstuck. Export from the old device first, then re-import on the new device once you are set up. (Today this is a manual paste; a one-tap import feature is planned.)
If your phone is lost
Unstuck data lives on the device, so a lost phone means the data on that phone is lost unless you have an export or an iCloud/computer backup. The privacy upside: Unstuck data is not on any server that someone else could access. The tradeoff: if you do not back up, there is no Unstuck-side recovery path.
Exported files
Exported files can contain consumer health data (under Washington and other state laws). Once a file leaves the app, you are responsible for protecting it. Store it in a secure location.
