What's happening
The mind is doing what it does. Holding the thing. Running the loop. Pulling you through the same conversation, decision, or worry one more time, then one more after that.
Two things tend to be true at once. The loop feels like it's solving something. It almost never is. And the loop has a job that's mostly real, which is to keep you from forgetting whatever it's holding. The work is to give the loop somewhere else to put the thing, so it can stop holding it.
A 60-second reset
- Notice. Say it out loud or to yourself: "My mind is looping." Naming that you're in the loop is the first step out of it.
- Name. What's the loop actually about? One word or one sentence. Specific is better than vague.
- Unload. Open Unstuck and write the loop down. Even half a sentence. The loop's job is to hold it. Your phone can hold it instead.
- Next Step. Set one small reminder for tomorrow so the loop knows the thing won't be lost. Then close the app.
What not to do
- Don't try to "stop thinking about it." The brain doesn't have an off switch for a thought it considers important.
- Don't reach for a longer journal entry than you have energy for. Three words written down counts.
- Don't open social media. The brain reads scrolling as more loop fuel.
If this keeps happening
If the loop is showing up most days, that's a pattern, and the work moves from a one-time reset to learning to read the pattern. shrinQ teaches a structured way to do that. If the loop comes with insomnia, see the can't-sleep page. If it comes with avoidance, see the procrastinating page.
Understand the why
The reasons this reset works, explained in a minute each on ShrinkDaily, the daily learning layer of The Shrink Network.
Look up the words on Shrinktionary, the language layer of The Shrink Network:
For the reference on why this happens, see the Shrinkopedia entries on racing thoughts and rumination. A next read for later, not for right now.
Your next step in The Shrink Network
You are here: Unstuck, the reset layer of The Shrink Network. This site does one job: small, self-guided resets for the moment you're in. The rest of the network covers understanding, evidence, medication, patterns, and care.
Each site in the network has one job. No matter where you enter, we help you find the next step that makes sense.

Every moment uses the same four moves. Read the thinking behind them on the Reset Method, or browse the full Moments library. For the longer read on this topic, see the Overthinking section of the Journal.
