Moments

When you're frozen.

A small reset for the task you can't seem to start.

What's happening

Freezing isn't laziness. It's usually one of two things. Either the task is bigger than your current capacity to start it, or the task is loaded with enough anxiety that approaching it triggers a small threat response. In both cases, the brain reads the task as too costly to start right now and looks for any reason to delay.

The work is to lower the activation energy. Make the first step so small that the brain stops reading it as threatening.

A 60-second reset

  • Notice. You've been about to start for 90 minutes. Two tabs are open. You're not avoiding by accident. That's the moment.
  • Name. Say it: "I'm frozen on this." Don't add a story about why. Just name it.
  • Unload. Open Unstuck and write down what the very first step of the task actually is. Smallest possible version. Not "write the document." "Open the document and read the title." The brain treats specific small first steps as far less threatening than abstract big ones.
  • Next Step. Do the small step you just wrote down. Even half of it counts. Then close the app.

What not to do

  • Don't try to "find motivation." Motivation is downstream of starting, not upstream.
  • Don't switch to a different task. The brain learns from the switch that hard tasks can be avoided.
  • Don't open social media for "just a minute."

If this keeps happening

Freezing across most tasks for weeks at a time can be a sign of depression, ADHD, or burnout. They overlap and require different interventions. A clinical conversation is more useful than another productivity system.

Understand the why

The reasons this reset works, explained in a minute each on ShrinkDaily, the daily learning layer of The Shrink Network.

Look up the words on Shrinktionary, the language layer of The Shrink Network:

For the reference on why this happens, see the Shrinkopedia entries on avoidance and the window of tolerance. A next read for later, not for right now.

Your next step in The Shrink Network

You are here: Unstuck, the reset layer of The Shrink Network. This site does one job: small, self-guided resets for the moment you're in. The rest of the network covers understanding, evidence, medication, patterns, and care.

Each site in the network has one job. No matter where you enter, we help you find the next step that makes sense.
